Collection(s):

The Bastion of the Butchers in Baia Mare is part of the old fortification system of the city which for a long time was located, along with the Red Tower, the Dogarilor Bastion and the Blood Tower, on one of the main access roads to the city. It has two levels and a total height of 13 m. The ground floor has a circular, vaulted room with walls pierced by three vents. The thickness of the wall is 1.5 m at the base and decreases to a thickness of 1 m at the top. The first floor of the bastion corresponds to the defensive level of the tower, today having eight ramparts (crenelles) that probably date from the period of an intervention in the 17th century. For the protection of the soldiers, the r...amparts were provided with wooden or metal shutters. Access to the upper floor is provided by a wooden staircase arranged diagonally on the outside of the tower. The roof is cone-shaped. Over time, the Butchers' Bastion was affected by events, recorded in documents, being rebuilt several times. It was partially damaged in 1567, and greater destruction, like the other defense towers, suffered in 1672 and 1689, when the city was attacked by Austrian imperial troops. The bastion was also restored in 1961 and 1962 and, recently, between 2009 and 2011.
