The Gorj Museum was born in the town on Jiu, at the end of the 19th century thanks to people who love culture, whose goal was to raise Gorje spirituality. The institution was among the first museums in the country and has its origins in the historical concerns of its founder, the founder Alexandru Ştefulescu (1856-1910), who in 1893 founded a historical and archaeological collection of the boys' primary school in Targu- Jiu, where he worked as a teacher and director. Passionate about history, about the past of this county, rightly called historic and picturesque, Alexandru Ştefulescu gathered around him people of culture, who helped and supported him in his initiatives, such as pro...fessor Iuliu Moisil, engineer Aurel Diaconovici and plastic artist Vitold Rola Piekarski. His private collections were added to the Ştefulescu collection, which actually constituted the core of the museum. "Today, July 16, 1894, this museum was founded, says the act of incorporation, in which all those who value our Romanian nation, the historical, ethnographic, flora, fauna and prehistoric past of the Gorju will find it." With the beginning of the 20th century, the group of the main animators of the museum broke up, in 1910 Alexandru Ştefulescu died. The museum did not disappear, but the years of the war endangered its existence, with part of the collection being alienated or destroyed. After the war, the remaining historical pieces will be reorganized in an exhibition at the Tudor Vladimirescu High School. In 1925, on the initiative of the Gorj Women's League and its president Aretia Tatarescu, a fund-raising campaign was opened for the construction of a building intended for the museum, a project entrusted to the architect Iulius Doppelreiter, drawn up according to the architecture of the Crăsnaru tower in Groterea Gorj and erected in the Public Garden of the city of Târgu-Jiu. The new museum will be inaugurated on September 5, 1926 and will function here until 1954, when due to insufficient space for the collections, the museum moved to a nationalized building (lawyer Bicescu's houses) on Tudor Vladimirescu street, no. 73. Towards the end of 1974, a new building was found for the museum, to house its increasingly numerous collection, namely that of the former Administrative Palace in Griviţei str. (today Geneva) no. 8, the place where it had debuted as an institution in 1894 . Since 1975, the new exhibition of history and archeology as well as one of plastic arts has been reorganized here on a scientific basis. In 1990, the fine arts section was moved to a new building, located on Brâncuşi Boulevard, near Gradina Publica (the former Ceausescu residence). This was named Constantin Brâncuşi. In 1996, the history and archeology section of the Gorj County Museum was named after Alexandru Ştefulescu, the father of Gorj history.
