The Cotroceni National Museum is a memorial institution, focused on reflecting the history of the Cotroceni ensemble, on its evolution and transformations over time. The medieval part of the Cotroceni National Museum is represented by the spaces built during the reign of the voivode Şerban Cantacuzino (1678-1688). Between May 26, 1679 and August 24, 1682 - data found in the inscription on the church door frame and in the one next to the fresco of the founders - the church, the monks' cells, the royal palace, the abbot's houses, all these constructions forming the Cotroceni Monastery, the founder's residence . Currently, in the Cotroceni National Museum you can visit the kitchen of the ...former Cotroceni Monastery, the refectory (dining room), a few cells and two spaces belonging to the former royal palace, representative spaces for the construction technique and for the Romanian architecture from the end of the century. 17th century (Great Cellar and Small Cellar). The beginning of the modern era was marked, in 1821, by the settlement of Tudor Vladimirescu's camp on the Cotrocenilor plateau. During the 1848 revolution, the Ottoman army led by Fuad-Efendi occupied the Cotroceni Monastery. The reign of Barbu Ştirbey (1849-1853) proved beneficial to the area, the ruler restoring and redecorating the royal palace that became his summer residence. At the same time, in order to facilitate the connection with the Capital, the ruler Ştirbey cut a new road, which sectioned the great park of the monastery, thus separating the princely area from that of the future Botanical Garden, whose beginnings date back to 1860. After the 1977 earthquake, restoration work began and lasted about 10 years. From July 12, 1991, by government decision, the old wing of the Cotroceni Palace (in the new wing, built since 1980, the Presidential Administration currently operates) was transformed into a museum - the Cotroceni National Museum, open to the public on December 27, 1991. Today, the Cotroceni National Museum, a leading cultural institution in the cultural landscape of Bucharest, aims to continue its mission, that of being a space for debate and artistic dialogue, and on the other hand, to support initiatives on the restoration process, preservation and capitalization of the national cultural heritage, as a way of promoting the national identity, in close connection with the academic environment and the civil society.
